Using online calculators responsibly

Calculators are useful for quick estimates, checking arithmetic and understanding a number before you make a decision. They are not a replacement for a bank statement, loan agreement, tax professional, doctor or legal adviser.

Percentage calculations

When calculating a percentage, confirm which number is the base. For example, 10% of 500 is 50, but increasing 500 by 10% gives 550. Writing the calculation in words before entering it helps prevent mistakes.

EMI estimates

An EMI calculation typically uses loan amount, annual interest rate and repayment period. Actual instalments can differ because of processing fees, changing rates, insurance, prepayments and the lender’s own schedule. Always compare the result with the lender’s written offer.

Age calculations

Age results depend on the date format and the current date. For official forms, enter the date exactly as it appears in your records and follow the rules of the organisation receiving the form.
